End of the Year

Dear JAMSters,

With the Holiday season well underway I wanted to wish you all lasting health and happiness for the coming new year and thank you for making JAMS such a success this year.

Next year promises to be even better and will start off with a great lineup for our January 25th meeting:

6:00pm Dean Procter - Vaccinia Virus BTB-Kelch Proteins and the Ubiquitin-Proteasome System during poxvirus infection.
6:15pm Josie van Dorst - The impact of petroleum hydrocarbons on microbial diversity in a sub-Antarctic soil; a proxy for soil health.
7:15pm Iain Duggin - The unusual life and cell cycles of extreme Archaea.

This will be followed by our anniversary half-day meeting at the Australian museum with an expanded schedule, some great speakers from out of town and a poster session for PhD students. As an incentive for students to present their work, the best poster will be awarded with the inaugural B&D Best Poster Award.

The rest of the meeting is detailed below:

2.30 - 3.00pm Poster setup
3.00 - 3.15pm Welcomes, introductions and acknowledgements
3.15 - 3.45pm Stan Robert - CSIRO Tasmania
3.45 - 4.15pm Tim Stinnear - University of Melbourne
4.15 - 6.00pm Poster session with tea/coffee break at 5pm
6.00 - 6.30pm Brajesh Singh - University of Western Sydney
6.30 - 7.00pm Mark Morrison - CSIRO Queensland
7.00 - 8.30pm 2-course banquet in the Dinosaur room with wine, beer and soft drinks
8.30 - 9.00pm Closing remarks and poster winners announcement

The cost of the event is partially covered by a generous sponsorship from B&D, the Australian Museum and POCD Scientific. The rest will be covered by registration which is set at $100 and will include the dinner and drinks. I will start collecting money at the meeting in January. Please let me know in advance if you need a tax receipt.

Finally, in addition to our monthly meetings, on April 12th 2012, JAMS has been invited to visit the Hawkesbury River for the Environment in Sydney west. We are still defining the details of this "JAMS goes west" event but I will know more early next year. If you want to take part in this road-trip please let me know by March 10th.

That is all for this year.

Enjoy the holidays,
