Cultivation, interactions and biomolecules of marine phototrophs
Description of the research project: The central aim of this project is to utilise novel approaches to cultivate marine phototrophs. Work will focus on marine Synechococcus where fine-scale genetic analysis has revealed the occurrence of several novel environmentally abundant clades without cultured representatives, despite more than 30 years of culturing effort on this genus. In particular, the project will use molecular and biochemical approaches to investigate the role of novel interactions with marine heterotrophs that may facilitate culture isolation. The work will combine laboratory experimentation with field research on transatlantic cruises.
Requirements and training: We are looking for a postdoctoral scientist (PDRA position) with expertise in expertise in microbiology and molecular biology/ecology. Familiarity with microbial culturing and a willingness to participate in research cruises is desirable.
The investigator, carrying out world-class science, will provide in-depth training and supervision of the successful candidate in all the specific and unique techniques required for the project and will encourage further method development. This three year postdoctoral position at the University of Warwick is supported by funding from the EU as part of an FP7 funded project MaCuMBA - Marine microorganisms: cultivation methods for improving their biotechnological applications.
The appointment is offered on a fixed term contract basis for three years. The successful applicant will join a vibrant research group working on various aspects of the microbiology of marine picophytoplankton [see http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/fac/sci/lifesci/people/dscanlan/ and http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/fac/sci/lifesci/research/marinemicro].
