The Centre for Marine Bio-Innovation (CMB), School of Biological Earth and Environmental 
Sciences (BEES) is seeking to appoint a marine microbial ecologist to undertake research and postgraduate supervision within one of Australia’s most dynamic research environments. 
UNSW was one of only four universities within Australia to achieve an average research ranking over 4 in the 2010 national ERA research assessment undertaken by the Australian Research Council. BEES was a major contributor to UNSW obtaining rankings of 5/5 for Biological Sciences (well above world research standards) and 4/5 for Earth Sciences (significantly above world standards).
BEES is a large, multi-disciplinary, research intensive school in the Faculty of Science at the University of New South Wales, dedicated to pure and applied research in natural systems spanning the biological sciences to the geosciences. The school incorporates a range of environmentally-relevant 
disciplines enabling the School to undertake comprehensive education and research in the broad fields of Biology, Marine Science, Geography and Geology. 
 
About the role
• $91K-$96K plus (17% superannuation and leave loading)
• Fixed Term 2 years
• Full-time
 
The Centre for Marine Bio-Innovation (CMB) aims to be an international leader in the emerging field of holobiont biology and ecology, which focuses on the role that interactions between microorganisms and higher eukaryotes play in the function and health of host organisms and ecosystems. In particular, this role will be focused on studying host-microbiome interactions on marine habitat-forming seaweeds.
 
About the successful applicant
 
The Post Doctoral Research Associate will be a highly motivated microbial ecologist / microbiologist to work in a two-year research project studying marine host-microbiome interactions as part of an ARC Discovery project based at the Centre for Marine Bio-Innovation, UNSW (Randwick campus).
 
The appointee will also develop research projects relevant to the CMB interests.
To be successful in this role you will have:

  • A PhD in Microbial Ecology, Microbiology, or related fields, including practical experience with molecular methods (amplicon sequencing, bioinformatics of metagenomic, metatranscriptomic and qPCR data)
  • Experience in experimental design and statistical analysis of microbial community datasets
  • Strong communication skills, as demonstrated by publications, and the ability to work as part of a research team
